“My kind of partners,” she replied, leaning forward to take her own drink. From the chair arrangement, we were equidistant from each other, all positioned so we could see each other. And when she leaned forward, we were clearly able to see the most infinitesimal peek of a lacy black bra.

It was over in a moment, but it felt simultaneously like forever and not long enough. She straightened up in her chair, tossed her hair behind her with a practiced flick, and smiled. “Slàinte,” she purred, and took a sip.

“Here’s lookin’ at you,” Herc said, and did the same.

“Cheers,” I said, and took a sip. I closed my eyes and let the scotch swirl over my tongue, tasting the rich, subtle mix of smoky peat and salt-caramel, with a hint of the sea behind it all. It went down smooth, the heat of it blossoming in my chest with the delicacy of a night-blooming flower. “Wow,” I said, opening my eyes. “That was exquisite.”

“Yeah, Jesus,” Herc replied, nodding. “Smooth and perfect.

You know how to pick ‘em, Ms. Scott.”

“Brielle,” she said. “Now that we’re about to have a working relationship, you can call me by my first name.”

“Or both,” Herc said. “Both is probably good, if I’m being honest. It’s been a long day.”

Brielle laughed, and clicked her nails against her Scotch glass for a brief moment. “Like I said, it’s a tradition of mine. I bring all my new clients out for a drink. To discuss business, yes, but also to get a feel for who I’m working with.” She raised her glass to her lips again, but stopped short of drinking. “There are some things you simply can’t pick up from a strictly business meeting, don’t you agree?” She took a sip.

I smiled. The game was afoot. There was no way she wasn’t teasing us in, drawing us closer to her. Herc might have been the dealmaker and the people person, but I’d been with more than my share of women, and I was old hat at picking up what they could put down. Brielle, right now, was putting down one hell of a lot, and I was ready to pick it up and throw it over my shoulder.

“Yeah,” I said coolly. “You could say that I’m intimately familiar with that strategy.”

Herc seemed to be in the exact same place I was. He followed up, picking up perfectly from where I left off. “We tend to be very in-depth when it comes to sussing out the people we partner with.”

Brielle smiled, but it was there. For just a moment. A very small, very brief flutter of her lashes. If you knew it,
